Amir Khan defeated Devon Alexander by a unanimous points decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night in an impressive all-round performance.
Khan controlled the fight from the start with his fast hands, combinations and improved defensive skills to out-punch his American rival who could do nothing to change the rhythm of the fight.
Despite his corner imploring him to be more aggressive, Alexander appeared lost for ideas as the fight went on as he was out of range for the most part before being picked off by Khan as he came inside to trade.
As a result, Khan was given the nod by the three judges who scored the bout, 118-110, 119-109 and 120-108 all in favour of the British star.
Unsurprisingly, the first thing on Khan’s mind after the fight was a clash with Floyd Mayweather, and although he still wants the fight, it remains to be seen if the welterweight king is ready for Manny Pacquiao on May 2.
“I really believe that I’ve earned my shot against the best fighter in the world which is Floyd Mayweather,” Khan said in his post-bout interview in the ring, carried on Sky Sports 1. “I believe Khan v Mayweather will be huge, the UK fans will come to watch and come to support and we’re going to take the belt off him.
“I really believe Floyd will have big problems with speed, movement, accuracy. You know, Floyd’s one of the best fighters in the world, don’t get me wrong, but I want my chance now, let’s see what happens.”
Khan added that he wasn’t ruling out a future bout with domestic rival Kell Brook, but ultimately it wasn’t on the agenda in the near future.
