In an end to end affair the Reds broke the deadlock through Philippe Coutinho in the 30th minute. The Brazilian’s goal looked like a delightful lob at first, but after replays it was possible to tell that the shot had taken a major deflection.
However, this didn’t dishearten the Villains, and they hit back before half time. Christian Benteke finished a flowing move from Tim Sherwood’s side to put them back in to the game. They then hit another ten minutes after the break with Fabian Delph smashing past Simon Mignolet after Benteke had done a lot of the hard work.
The Merseyside club attempted to find an equaliser in the dying stages, and the closest they got to a second was when a Gerrard header was cleared off the line. Mario Balotelli was also through on goal before being wrongly called offside with two minutes to go.
