Aston Villa defeated Everton 3-2 in a surprisingly high-scoring match that included a pair of first half goals by Villans forward Christian Benteke.
With the Villans ranked 16th following Leicester City’s big win over Newcastle United earlier in the day, Tim Sherwood’s club needed a lot of points to gain some distance from the relegation zone. The Villans answered the call with a massive first half.
Just ten minutes after the start of the game, Villans superstar forward Christian Benteke gave the Villa Park crowd a show with an incredible header goal off an assist by Fabian Delph to give Aston Villa an early 1-0 lead.
Everton struggled to gain possession in Aston Villa’s territory in the first half and it came back to bite them before the end of the half as Benteke scored an easy second goal.
In the second half it looked like Everton might be able to start a comeback as Romelu Lukaku scored a goal on a penalty kick for the Toffee, cutting Aston Villa’s lead to 2-1.
But Everton’s plans for a comeback were crushed just a few minutes later as Villans midfielder Tim Cleverly scored the club’s third goal of the day on a long shot to the high center of the goal, giving Aston Villa a solid 3-1 lead.
Everton would finish the day with five shots on goal but had a nightmare of a time getting past Villans goalie Shay Given. But in extra time they managed to make one last gasp on a goal by Phil Jagielka to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But it would not be enough as the Aston Villa defense held on for the win, moving up in the Premier League table to tie with Newcastle United at 14th.
