With Australia cruising at 232-2, Glenn Maxwell (23) and Aaron Finch (81) fell within five balls of each other to give India a chance to slow the co-hosts scoring rate.
Maxwell got off to a typically quick start but came undone after trying to sweep over backward square leg.
The under-fire Finch looked to be edging towards a much-needed century, but it wasn’t to be as a failed pull shot saw him caught at mid wicket.
