The Catalans were no match for Ajax.
Two of the most successful teams in European history matched up in the Champions League as Barceloan hosted Ajax at the Nou Camp.
These two sides have been heralded as the fathers of modern possession focused football, although in recent years Barca have been using this to much greater effect.
So it proved as a hat-trick from Lionel Messi and an effort from defender Gerard Pique led to a comfortable victory for the Catalans, as the Argentine becomes the first player in the tournament’s history to score four hat-tricks.
Cristiano Ronaldo must be wondering what the Portugal captain has to do to better Messi, with the 28-year-old also netting three on Tuesday night.
