Khan took the verdict 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113 on the three judges’ scorecards, as he moved to 31-3 in his professional career and continues to build momentum ahead of a possible showdown with Floyd Mayweather.
The 28-year-old was comfortable for the most part as he used his speed and counter punches to get the better of Algieri in exchanges, although the American did enjoy some success, particularly in the eighth round but it was all too inconsistent.
It was Algieri’s second consecutive loss after his lopsided defeat to Manny Pacquiao last year, and Khan will now hope to follow in the Filipino’s footsteps by facing Mayweather next.
The Brit made no secret of his wishes moving forward in his post-fight interview in the ring, insisting that he wanted the unbeaten superstar next and is adamant that he can become the first man to inflict a loss on him.
Mayweather is expected to retire after September 12, with that being the last fight date on his contract with Showtime and CBS. While there was speculation that he would face Pacquiao in a rematch next year, he has gone back on that suggestion and is expected to call time on his career later this year.
Whether or not it is Khan who he faces remains to be seen, but the two-time world champion will certainly hope his win on Friday night helped his cause.
