Khan admits taking Algieri fight in desperation: Other fights weren’t being made.
Given that the Brit hasn’t been shy about talking of his hopes of facing the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in the future, it came as a shock to see him react so angrily to questions.
While the reporter certainly worded his question in a way which sounded like criticism and spoke of Khan chasing Pac-Man rather than Mayweather when he hasn’t particularly done so, it arguably did warrant the reaction that it got.
However, there is also an argument to say that Khan can’t pick and choose when he wants to talk up a bout with Mayweather or Pacquiao, as even though he insisted earlier this month that he wouldn’t chase the fight in the same way, he has consistently spoken about it in the build-up to this bout.
Nevertheless, he is right to insist that his focus is on Algieri with just two days to go before fight night, and the 28-year-old will be fully aware that he can’t slip up against the American as it would put his standing in the division in jeopardy moving forward.
Khan has every right to want the biggest fights out there and ultimately he would have a great chance of becoming the first man to defeat Mayweather. However, he will continue to receive criticism for the way in which he has gone about it, while fans in the UK will continue to hope that a domestic showdown with Kell Brook can be made.
