Tyson was speaking in Las Vegas ahead of the biggest fight in boxing history between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand on Saturday night.
While the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world has previously suggested that he backs the Filipino to win the bout, he conceded this time round that he wasn’t too sure.
Opinion is certainly split between the two pound-for-pound greats, but essentially the answers will be provided on Saturday night as they settle their long-time rivalry in the ring.
However, that wasn’t the part of Tyson’s interview that has caused a stir as he was then asked not only for his opinion on the current heavyweight division but also about Mayweather’s recent comments.
The 48-year-old suggested that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder needed one more test before taking on Wladimir Klitschko, although he seemed resigned to the fact that the Ukrainian is still the king of the weight class.
Meanwhile, he wasn’t impressed at all by Mayweather’s suggestion last week that he was greater than Ali, as the former champion looked up to the man considered the greatest of all time during his career.
While Mayweather’s 47-0 record certainly puts him in the conversation about the all-time greats in the sport, many still don’t regard him to be in the same echelons as Ali who stood for much more and made a significant impact outside of the ring too.
