It is a highly anticipated bout that will follow up Mayweather vs Pacquiao to cap a memorable Cinco de Mayo fight week, with two heavy-hitters expected to go to war in the ring.
Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs), was unable to land his bout with Miguel Cotto, but instead Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) steps up in what is expected to be a toe-to-toe brawl at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros.
The Mexican superstar has previously insisted that he was delighted to play a part in ensuring that Mayweather-Pacquiao was made after applying pressure to their camps over the May 2 date he originally had lined up for his showdown with Cotto.
He added that it was good for both the sport and the fans that the super-fight was finally agreed to, but his focus will be on preparing for Kirkland with many expecting it to be a real slug-fest as the pair also benefit from the increased exposure that the sport will receive the week before.
Canelo has lost just once in his career with that defeat coming against Mayweather back in September 2013, and at the time that fight became the most lucrative in boxing history.
Now the 25-year-old is preparing for another exciting night, and the fans as well as rapper and businessman 50 Cent turned up for the start of the fun and games with the head-to-head between the two fighters.
