But despite their lowly stature within the game, Cape Verde are actually ranked 38th in the world, and showed their giant killing credentials by stunning their hosts with two goals in the first half.
Portugal are currently top of their European Championship qualifying group, but opted to rest a number of their top players, including Ronaldo, for what should have been a routine meeting with their former colony.
However, with just over half an hour gone the visitors were in front thanks to a freak goal from the right hand side by Odair Fortes.
Their advantage was doubled on the stroke of half time when Admilson Gege latched onto a low free kick on the edge of the box.
To make matters worse, Portugal were reduced to ten men in the second half when Andre Pinto was given his marching orders.
