It might not have been for a title, but Chael Sonnen backed up his pre-fight talk to earn a submission of the night award and his seventh win inside the Octagon.
Sonnen (28-13-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) submitted former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua (21-8 MMA, 5-6 UFC) with a first-round guillotine choke in the main event of UFC Fight Night 26.
While the winner was never going to move closer to a title fight in the near-future, it gives Sonnen momentum moving forward after back-to-back losses to Jon Jones and Anderson Silva in respective title fights.
Sonnen did not waste any time in going to his wrestling background and he shot in for the takedown and got Rua down the mat.
However, ‘Shogun’ did well to work the fight back up onto the feet soon after before Sonnen resumed the grinding, ground-and-pound game he is renowned for.
But with time running out in the first round Sonnen surprised Hua and most of the crowd at the TD Gardens when he locked in a tight guillotine hold, forcing the former 205 pound champ to tap 4.47 minutes into the first frame.
After the win Sonnen ranted and called out Wanderlei Silva for a bout in his usual showmanship fashion.
“Right here on the UFC’s new home, FOX Sports 1, Wanderlei Silva, 6-feet tall and 205 pounds,” Sonnen said in his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator Joe Rogan. “Boy until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high.”
