Chelsea were awful last night.
Jose Mourinho’s side suffered their heaviest Premier League defeat since their 4-1 loss at Liverpool in 2012, as West Bromwich Albion cruised to a 3-0 victory at the Hawthorns.
Chelsea’s have not rotated their squad much this season and, although Mourinho gave first-team chances to Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Izzy Brown at West Brom, his starting XI was still packed full of senior stars.
Many of those senior stars failed to perform to an acceptable standard.
The overall display stank of a team in summer holiday mode, which is understandable – after all Chelsea have already won the double.
The first star man to let himself down was Cesc Fabregas, who was shown the second red cad of his career when he kicked the ball at Chris Brunt’s head. His first red came nine years for grabbing Tim Cahill in an aggressive manner.
Next, captain John Terry messed up. He too could have been sent off, but his scruffy foul on Saido Berahino was punished only with a penalty – no card. Still, such a reckless lunge is way out of character for a player who has been superb this season.
The final star man to under-perform was goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The big Belgian should have done much better with this strike from Brunt. He has made a few errors in the past month. Would Chelsea be foolish to let Petr Cech leave this summer?
