Chelsea will start the Premier League season with two losses in the past week. Is Mourinho playing a vanilla scheme before a super season or are the Blues actually struggling?
Chelsea were defeated 1-0 to ACF Fiorentina on Wednesday after a Gonzalo Rodriguez score stunned the Blues crowd.
In the final International Champions Cup match of the summer, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho decided to take the training wheels off new acquisitions Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic – and the results were frightenengly underwhelming.
In the first half Chelsea struggled to even get the ball into Fiorentina’s territory. If not for the fact that the announcers kept talking about Falcao, you likely would’ve forgotten that the former Portuguese Golden Ball winner was even on the field.
At the 34′ mark, Fiorentina finally broke the draw with a stunning goal from Gonzalo Rodriguez against Begovic that silenced the crowd at Stamford Bridge.
After struggling on defense and even moving John Terry to right back, Chelsea was no closer to winning later on in the match than they were before the goal.
Falcao was removed late in the game and half of the starters were subbed, but it made no difference as Fiorentina held on for the victory.
