Manchester United defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 thanks to a late score by midfielder Marouane Fellaini to avoid a tie.
Man U set the tone early in the match on a penalty goal from Juan Mata at the 19′ mark to take the 1-0 lead.
Though the penalty was not without controversy:
But the real controversy came later when Manchester United’s Luke Shaw broke his nose on a contact play that forced him to be carried off on a stretcher.
Refusing to take their foot off the gas though, Crystal Palace came to life early in the second half with a goal from Jason Puncheon at the 57′ mark to tie the game and give Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal quite a scare.
Crystal Palace missed a chance to take a lead and shock the world on a perfectly placed shot, but David de Gea made a fingertip save to retain the score.
Then at 78′, Marouane Fellaini broke the game wide open with a goal to give Manchester United the lead and the much needed win over Crystal Palace.
