Wilder faces Jason Gavern ahead of possible title fight against Stiverne later this year…
American heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder has insisted that he is ready to step up and become the new face of heavyweight boxing.
The 28-year-old will keep busy with a fight against Jason Gavern on Saturday night on the undercard of the Shawn Porter vs Kell Brook title bout, but he isn’t losing sight of the ultimate goal which is to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
Wilder (31-0, 31 KO), is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the division, but his detractors have criticised him for the level of opposition that he has faced up to this point in his career.
Stiverne will undoubtedly be a step up in quality when they clash for the WBC title, but the bout had to postponed after the champion suffered an injury with a new date expected to be announced for November.
Nevertheless, instead of waiting for his next opportunity, Wilder has opted to stay in shape and avoid inactivity by taking this fight, and although it is scheduled to be for 10 rounds, it is highly unlikely that Gavern will last the distance as Wilder insists that this one is for the fans.
