A shocking error from Aston Villa keeper Brad Guzan has gifted Chelsea the lead against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
Guzan tried to play the ball to full back Joleon Lescott, but his pass was too strong for the Villa player to control. Willian pounced and rolled the ball to an unmarked Diego Costa, who tapped into an empty net.
It means Chelsea have taken a huge step towards claiming their first three points in the league since their 2-0 win over Arsenal in mid-September.
The goal actually came against the run of play; both Alan Hutton and Rudy Gestede had chances to put Villa ahead in the opening half an hour.
It was a nightmare scenario for under-pressure Villa boss Tim Sherwood. Media reports this morning suggested he had two games to save his job – and his despair was apparent as the ball hit the net.
