The home side were behind early as Sergio Parisse bundled the ball over the line, calling England’s defence into question:
George Ford belatedly got England on the board just after the 20 minute mark, before Billy Vunipola’s controversial try put the hosts in front:
Man of the match Jonathan Joseph extended the advantage, and this time Ford successfully converted to give England a somewhat undeserved ten point lead:
Italy refused to lie down, with Luca Morisi dragging them back to within eight points – after the boot of Ford had extended England’s advantage – but a missed conversion left the score at 18-10.
They were back in the game for just seven minutes, as quick thinking from Ben Youngs gave England back their cushion, and suddenly the hosts quality began to shine:
Danny Cipriani scored the pick of three further tries from England, scoring within a minute of his international return:
Italy scored a late consolation to leave the final score at 47-17, and after the game England boss Stuart Lancaster said his side should have done better, despite the margin of victory:
