Liverpool midfielder Matty Virtue scored his first goal at Under-21 level on Friday night as his stunning long-range effort pegged back Tottenham Hotspur.
Eighteen-year-old Virtue smashed home from the second phase of a corner kick to equalise for the Reds in a Barclays Under-21 Premier League game at Stevenage’s Broadhall Way.

Virtue began his career at Chelsea before moving to Liverpool “as an U-11”, according to his profile on the official Reds website.
A Q&A article on the same website says that Xabi Alonso was his childhood idol, while he names Steven Gerrard as the Liverpool player he most admired.
Both Alonso and Gerrard had a knack of scoring from long range. Either man would have been proud to have produced a hit as clean as Virtue’s against Spurs.
Half time: Spurs 1-1 Liverpool
