Heir apparent takes over the reigns
After the dumping of Steve Waugh as ODI captain, the Australian side rebounded well under the leadership of Ricky Pointing in 2002.
Ponting helped Australia to strong series wins over South Africa (308 runs at 77.25) and Pakistan (342 at 85.50).
Season 2003 also marked Ponting’s first World Cup win as captain and his team stormed through the Pool and knockout stages before they faced India in the final.
Australia were amazingly sent into bat in what appeared to be ideal batting conditions, and Ponting made the most his opportunity, smashing 140 not out in one of the most brutal one-day innings ever seen, helping his side to victory.
