George Groves defeated Christopher Rebrasse at Wembley Arena on Saturday to become the new European champion and the mandatory challenger for the WBC super-middleweight world title.
In his first fight since his loss to domestic rival Carl Froch back in May, Groves was taken the distance by his French opponent, but seemingly looked in control throughout.
While Rebrasse did trouble the 26-year-old at times, particularly as the Londoner appeared to tire during the bout, Groves won comfortably on the judges scorecards and can now look forward to a possible title shot in the coming months.
Dirrell was asked about Groves in a recent interview and was wholly dismissive of his future opponent, claiming that he did not deserve a chance at his WBC world title.
However, Groves has now put himself in a mandatory position to fight for the belt, but admits that he isn’t sure as to when he will get the opportunity to face Dirrell and may well take a ‘keep-busy’ fight in the meantime.
Groves also suggested that he would love a third opportunity at Carl Froch with the WBA and IBF champion ringside on Saturday, but the ‘Cobra’ was in no mood to entertain the idea having won their first two meetings.
