The new captain at the county has been forced to finish after four matches with ankle problem.
Surrey skipper Graeme Smith is disappointed to have to end his first County Championship season prematurely as he returns to South Africa for ankle surgery.
Smith was undertaking the first of a three-year contract with the side, but just four matches into his stint injury has ended the 32-year-old’s campaign.
Recovery from the operation will see the Proteas Test captain miss the Champions Trophy with the South Africans as well and his absence will be a big blow for both club and country.
