Inter scored in the second minute when a partially-cleared corner was picked up by the original taker Antonio Cassano and the Italy international’s cross-shot was fumbled over the line by Chievo goalkeeper Christian Puggioni.
The Flying Donkeys responded well and, in the 12th minute, almost levelled when Francesco Acerbi sent a free-header wide with only Inter keeper Samir Handanovic to beat.
Chievo did find an equaliser nine minutes later through, when Rigoni pulled away from his marker to head past Handanovic from the edge of the six-yard box.
Inter were stung into action and Esteban Cambiasso brought a fine save out of Puggioni.
But there was nothing the visiting goalkeeper could do after 26 minutes when Ranocchia rose highest at a corner to power a header into the net.
Diego Milito added a third in the second half as Inter moved to within a point of third place Lazio, who drew with Napoli on Saturday.
