James DeGale has conceded that he doesn’t believe that Carl Froch will fight him next year as he prepares to face Marco Antonio Periban on November 22.
The 28-year-old made the announcement in a press conference on Thursday as he looks to put on an impressive display against a respected opponent in boxing circles.
However, the ultimate aim for DeGale remains making history by becoming the first British Olympic gold medallist to go on and win a world title, and whether that comes against Froch or not, the Londoner isn’t sure.
As the mandatory challenger for Froch’s IBF strap, DeGale is expected to find out after December 31 what the champion will decide to do next which could mean a fight is made or the belt is vacated.
However, having turned down the opportunity of a routine eight-rounder on November 22 in Liverpool, DeGale will be focusing his attention on beating Periban in order to preserve his number one ranking with the IBF.
Should he lose, he will lose the right to fight Froch in the early part of 2015, but DeGale highly doubts that the fight will happen despite suggestions from promoter Eddie Hearn that it will and he is preparing to put on a show next month to take another step closer to a world title.
