DeGale to feature on Froch-Groves 2 undercard against Gonzales.
British star James DeGale has signed with Matchroom and will feature on the Carl Froch vs George Groves 2 undercard on May 31 at Wembley Stadium.
The 28-year-old revealed that he has been depressed over the last year as his standing in the sport has dropped with low key fights at small venues despite the fact that he has worked his way into final eliminator scenarios for both the WBC and IBF titles.
However, he now will fight Brandon Gonzales on May 31 in an IBF final eliminator which would then put him in a position to fight the winner of Froch-Groves 2.
DeGale conceded that in his opinion Froch would be the “better fight for me”, given their styles, but inevitably he is keen to renew his bitter rivalry with Groves after he was defeated back in 2011.
It is an exciting time for the Olympic gold medal winner, and although he still has many detractors it shouldn’t take away from the fact that fight fans are likely to see yet another big British showdown later this year if he is able to come through the Gonzales test unscathed.
Hearn revealed that he was delighted with the news of adding DeGale to his growing stable, and he will relish the opportunity to promote another major domestic fight should everything go according to plan on May 31.
It’s another significant day for British boxing, and with just over 7 weeks until 60,000 plus descend on Wembley, DeGale will be looking ahead with great excitement over where this switch could take his career moving forward.
