One-time world No 1wins last-eight showdown in three sets.

Jelena Jankovic was taken all the way by Italy’s Roberta Vinci in a thrilling quarter-final of the Sony Open in Miami on Wednesday, before eventually prevailing 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to book her place in the semi-finals, where she will play Maria Sharapova.

Although Jankovic breezed through the opening set against the 15^th seed, she appeared to lose focus after that, dropping her serve and then the second set too.

However, in the third and deciding set the one-time world No 1 recovered her composure and proved just too strong for Vinci.
