After Newcastle failed to clear a corner, Raheem Sterling found Emre Can on the left side of the penalty area, who spotted Allen, somehow left in a remarkable amount of space just outside the six yard box.
Can sent in a cross a taller player might have been able to reach with his head – but not the 5’6″ Allen.
Still, despite failing to make contact with the ball with his initial attempt at a header, there wasn’t a Newcastle player anywhere near the Welshman, and he had time to rifle in a shot beyond Tim Krul.
It was the least Liverpool deserved after a host of missed chances, but Newcastle fans will undoubtedly be left frustrated at their team’s propensity to shoot themselves in the foot time and time again.
Allen deserves credit though, and once again is proving himself worthy of his place in the team ahead of Steven Gerrard. Even though the captain was still suspended for this game, Allen looks a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ first choice Reds XI, and is making clear progress in overcoming the doubters.
