The game started off badly for Atleti, who lost key playmaker Koke through injury.
However, veteran midfielder Tiago gave the defending champions the lead, though there’s is an argument to suggest that Iker Casillas should have done much better.
Substitute Saul Niguez then doubled the hosts advantage with a beautifully acrobatic bicycle kick.
As Atleti piled on the pressure, they were perhaps unlucky to not have been awarded a penalty as Sami Khedira blocked with his hand.
However, some more hideous defending from Real allowed the impressive Antoine Griezmann in to notch the side’s third.
And a fine day at the office for Atleti was capped off as Mario Mandzukic connected perfectly with a cross from strike partner Fernando Torres.
