Lorient have kept alive their chances of playing European football next season with a 2-1 win against Evian Thonon Gaillard at home in Ligue 1.
After a lacklustre first half an hour, the game came to life on 43 minutes when Lorient were awarded a penalty after Betao was judged to have fouled Jeremie Aliadiere.
The former Arsenal man stepped himself and scored from the resulting spot-kick, before Kevin Monnet-Paquet turned in Maxime Barthelme’s cross to double Lorient’s lead 12 minutes from time.
The hosts’ second goal proved crucial as Betao pulled a goal back for Evian in the 83rd minute when he headed home Milos Ninkovic’s corner.
Evian piled forward in the final few minutes but Lorient held on for the win.
