Back in the rough and tumble days of the NBA in 1983, Tree Rollins for the Atlanta Hawks caused a stir when he clashed with Boston Celtics star Danny Ainge.
Rollins hit Ainge in the side of the head with an elbow which caused the Celtics player to tackle his opponent to the ground, and in the resulting, tussle, the Hawks player bite down hard on Ainge’s finger.
The Premier League has seen this type of behaviour before, with Jermaine Defoe attempting to bite Javier Mascherano after a tackle in Tottenham’s clash with West Ham in 2006.
Because Defoe was booked for the incident by the referee, the England forward faced no further punishment.
Luis Suarez is unlikely to be so lucky, with his bite on Ivanovic missed by the officials, and will likely face a ban.
