Jose Mourinho doubted Chelsea hero’s future upon his return to Stamford Bridge
The Spaniard was given an incredible amount of time and space by the Gunners, pealing away from Nacho Monreal at the back post to volley a Ashley Young cross into the bottom corner past David Ospina.
It was the only real chance in what has been a particularly scrappy game, so far – Arsenal have yet to have a shot of any kind so far and have showed a surprising lack of impetus and coherence going forward.
Arsene Wenger will need his side to respond going into the second half as a United win will take them ahead of the Gunners in the Barclays Premier League into third and out of fourth, preventing the Red Devils from having to compete in a tricky Champions League qualifier at the beginning of next season.
Arsenal do have a game in hand over Louis van Gaal’s side and even if they lost this game but managed victory in their last two matches of the league season to Sunderland and West Brom at the Emirates, they would still achieve at least third.
