Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller claims turning down Man United move was easy
Having agreed a £25m move to the club last week – a deal that was reported by The Telegraph – many will be wondering what the 21-year-old can offer Louis van Gaal’s men.
Luckily, United legend Gary Neville, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, was on hand to explain exactly what makes him so dangerous.
Being a winger, his movement is valuable. While Ashley Young and Juan Mata have been keeping things ticking over on the flanks this term, there is a sense that Young is too direct and Mata prefers to be utilised through the middle.
Depay could take either of these positions and perform them to a high standard with his eyes closed. Neville states that English wingers are taught to master their movement, and Depay here shows why he is capable of creating doubt in the minds of opposing full-backs simply by checking his runs.
His pace, touch and composure will also be an asset. In the video above Neville highlights exactly why he has scored 22 goals in the Eredivise this term. United have some excellent players on their books at the moment, but there aren’t any that can do what Depay does.
From the evidence provided, there isn’t much he can’t do. Even without the ball he knows how to find his way into the box to find the right place at the right time.
And he doesn’t always have to rely on his runs to get goals either. The goalkeeper here perhaps could have done more to stop his shot, but he saw the opportunity and executed the delivery well enough from all from 30 yards out. It’s clear that confidence won’t be an issue.
And to top it all off, he’s more than capable of taking a world class set piece.
Depay is an all-round attacking threat, and Neville is rightly excited. United’s current crop should take note, they’ll need to be at their best next season to keep the Dutchman out of the team.
