United were unable to break the deadlock with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial going close. However, their frustration continued to grow as the game went on as both sides settled for a share of the spoils.
It was a third consecutive goalless draw that the Red Devils have been involved in, after firing blanks against Manchester City and Middlesbrough previously.
Much has been said about the Dutch tactician’s system and the way he has changed how United play, as he was forced to respond to criticism from United legend Paul Scholes this week about the topic, as reported by the BBC.
While it didn’t appear to change his methods on Saturday afternoon, perhaps Van Gaal showed the first signs that he is growing frustrated with the way his players are understanding his philosophy and that in turn left him disappointed with the display.
Whether or not United are able to adapt and adjust their style to become more progressive in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but the former Ajax boss remains defiant in his approach and is unlikely to make changes.
The 64-year-old prepares for a Champions League against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night, before his side host West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford next Saturday.
