New York Jets Quarterback must fight for his position for 2013 season. The Jets are a mess and a big reason for that mess was the play of QB Mark Sanchez.
Inconsistency, poor play and a lack of talent at wide receiver meant New York really struggled to get anything going at all.
It all culminated in week 15, when head coach Rex Ryan finally had seen enough and decided to drop his starter in favour of Greg McElroy, who went on to lead the team to victory and started the next week for the team.
If the Jets had the chance they would not play Sanchez, maybe even cut him. Problem is they must pay the $8m next season regardless, so it would be wasted money if he was just sat on the bench.
However Rex Ryan has come out and said the 2009 first round pick must compete for his spot next season, in a press conference at the NFL Combine, Ryan stated the entire offence must improve, including Sanchez.
“To say Mark Sanchez or this quarterback or that quarterback, I think there’s clearly going to be competition.” Ryan said.
“I always think a young player can improve,” he said. “I don’t think there is any doubt. I think if you look at Mark, what is he, 25, 26 years old, in the life of a quarterback, I don’t believe that’s over the hill by any stretch.”
It will be tough for Sanchez to hold onto his starting next season, especially if the Jets decide to draft someone in the upcoming draft. If the incumbent starter does find himself under centre at week one, he must make sure he doesn’t make too many more plays like the infamous butt-fumble play against the Patriots.
