A stoic defensive effort from Olympique de Marseille saw them defeat FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1.
Olympique de Marseille overcame FC Girondins de Bordeaux in a tense Ligue 1 match at Stade Velodrome.
As has often been the case for Marseille this season, Andre-Pierre Gignac proved the difference for the home side, with his 11th goal from 21 league starts.
When Benoit Cheyrou split the Bordeaux defence with a wonderful through ball from the halfway line, there was still plenty of work for Gignac to do, but the France striker finished superbly beyond goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso just before half time.
The second half was balanced on a knife edge, as Bordeaux pushed forward with gusto, but a valiant defensive effort from Marseille saw them through to the end.
Bordeaux only managed a single shot on target throughout the contest, but this was largely because of strong organisation at the back from the hosts, and some heroic blocking efforts when the midfield was occasionally breached.
The three points gained by Marseille, who brought controversial Englishman Joey Barton on as a substitute in the final minutes, allow them to retain hope of challenging Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title.
