Montpellier overcame Rennes in Ligue 1 with two late goals to continue their European chase.
Montpellier beat Stade Rennais to win a drab Ligue 1 match at Stade de la Mosson.
The home side had to wait until the 75th minute to take the lead, centre back Hilton pouncing on a loose ball to fire home.
Substitute Souleymane Camara scored in the closing minutes to seal the victory, and though the scoreline was comfortable in the end, Montpellier fans will be wondering how they had not won the match sooner and by a wider margin.
They had 13 shots in the match, of which only two were on target. Both went in, and Rene Girard will expect better finishing from his attacking players in future.
He will be pleased with his side’s defensive efforts though, and a third clean sheet in a row is a sign of progress after losing 4-1 away to Saint Etienne mere weeks ago.
As for Rennes, there is real cause for concern.
The away side have now won just a single match in their last six fixtures, and have now been overtaken in Ligue 1 by Montpellier.
Dreams of UEFA Champions League football suddenly seem very distant indeed.
