Despite the absences of Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol, the Chicago Bulls showed off their depth on Monday night with a win over the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center.
Rose sat out his second consecutive game with a hamstring strain while Gasol was ruled out with a calf strain, but that didn’t stop the Bulls (8-3) from moving to 6-0 on the road for the season.
Jimmy Butler led six players in double figures with 22 points, Taj Gibson added 20 points along with five rebounds and six assists, Mike Dunleavy had 19 points while Joakim Noah added 11 points and 16 rebounds.
“You tame ’em one at a time,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “In this league, when you start feeling good about yourself, that’s usually when you get knocked down. So we’ve got to keep that edge.”
There was another upset on Monday night with the Denver Nuggets picking up a win in Cleveland over the Cavaliers who had LeBron James available after he recovered from a cold.
Ty Lawson scored 24 points while Arron Afflalo added 23 as the Nuggets ended the Cavs’ four-game winning streak to push them down to 5-4 for the season.
James led the Cavaliers with 22 points but it wasn’t enough as coach Brian Shaw got a reaction from his players after their loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday.
Staying in the East, the Miami Heat picked up an impressive road win against the Brooklyn Nets with Mario Chalmers leading the charge with 22 points and five assists.
The victory brought an end to Miami’s three-game losing streak as they were able to deal with the absence of Dwyane Wade for a third straight game and pick up a much-needed win.
Over in the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies prevailed in the showdown between the top teams in the West with a win over the Houston Rockets.
Mike Conley put up 19 points and six assists as the Griz were able to blow out Houston with a 26-point win as Dwight Howard led the resistance with just 15 points and nine rebounds.
James Harden had just six points after shooting 1 of 8 from the field.
Meanwhile, there were no such problems for the San Antonio Spurs who ensured the Philadelphia 76ers remain winless at 0-10 after their 25-point win.
Matt Bonner had 18 points as coach Gregg Popovich was largely able to rest his Big Three, although Tim Duncan did finish the game with 16 points and nine rebounds while Kawhi Leonard had five points and 11 rebounds in limited action.
