Memphis Grizzlies star Vince Carter was moved to tears on Wednesday night as the Toronto Raptors honoured him with a video tribute at the Air Canada Centre.
As part of the on-going 20th anniversary celebrations, the Raptors aired a video tribute for Carter who spent six-plus seasons with the franchise between 1998-1999 and 2004-05 before he was traded to the New Jersey Nets.
Initially, the video was greeted by a few boos from the 20,000 fans in attendance, but gradually it turned into a mix of cheers and applause as Carter visibly became emotional during a break in the first quarter of the 96-92 win over the hosts.
Carter slowly pumped a fist in the air while nodding and shaking his head in appreciation as tears began to stream down his face. The Raptors bench were among those to stand up and applaud in a special moment for one of the franchise’s best players.
The Grizzlies star came off the bench in the game but was limited to 3-for-11 shooting in 28 minutes and went a disappointing 1-for-5 from three point range.
However, the game will be best remembered for a special moment for Carter, with the Raptors faithful showing forgiveness and joining in the celebration of his career with the organisation.
