The Wizards ultimately won Game 3 by 103-101, but it didn’t come without an almighty scare in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 35-18 with the Hawks bench stepping up to deliver as the starters struggled.
Having gone on a 17-0 run and then with Mike Muscala drilling a three-pointer to tie the game with seconds remaining, the ball found its way to Pierce on the last possession and he spun to find some room before banking in the game-winner to beat the buzzer to seal a sensational win for Washington.
Pierce finished the game with 13 points, while Nene, Bradley Beal and Otto Porter all scored 17 points apiece to lead the hosts to a crucial win as they protected home court and now put all the pressure on the No.1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Dennis Schroder was a huge spark off the bench for the Hawks with 18 points, but it wasn’t enough for them to seal a road win that would have handed them the advantage moving forward.
Instead, they must now brush off the loss and prepare for Game 4 in Washington on Monday night.
Meanwhile, as a whole, these NBA playoffs are certainly exceeding expectations with late drama ensuring that they will be remembered for a long time to come as Pierce showed yet again why he is still here.
