Tensions rise in the South African capital.
A friend of the recently-deceased Reeva Steenkamp says that Oscar Pistorius should not be granted bail.
As protesters gathered outside the court house in Pretoria, Ferdi Schuster said: “Obviously I am on Reeva’s side, but only God can judge and I think everybody deserves a fair chance. Whether he gets bail or not is up to the justice system, but I don’t think personally he deserves it.
“We all loved her and she was just a wonderful person, you know. And I am with these ladies behind me and I think what they are doing is right. I think against women, abuse in South Africa needs to stop and needs to be heard and I think more things should be done.
“They must set some kind of foundation, people who personally work with this type of thing. I think harsher sentences for the guys who overstep the boundaries, even for domestic violence, even hitting a woman. It’s not right. We were put on this earth as men to protect women. Not to hurt them.”
Meanwhile, Moshy Mathe from Youth for Survival, commented: “As women, are supposed to sleep with guns under our pillows, in case we mistake our loved ones with a burglar and kill them? And perhaps men will come here and see. How many tears must women shed before something is taken into notice?”
