In another night of wild controversy for the NRL the Parramatta Eels’ season is on life support after a bizarre and embarrassing finish to Friday night’s blockbuster at ANZ Stadium.
The Bulldogs put a month of losses behind them to escape with a hard-fought 18-16 victory but despite the courage and determination that showed to win the game all their good work will be overshadowed today by a late call that killed off the Eels’.
After holding onto a two-point lead for most of the second half Chris Sandow landed a 40-20 kick with two minutes left on the clock that revived the Eels’ hopes.
But as Sandow rushed down to take the quick tap the onfield officials were forced to call play back because the ballboy threw the ball into play instead of placing it on the touchline.
The disastrous incident was a crushing blow for the Eels who showed plenty of tenacity and spirit to fight their way back into the game after trailing 18-6 early.
