Two goals from Marco Sau in the second half lifted Cagliari away from the Serie A relegation zone and left Pescara in real danger as the Sardinians won 2-0 at the Stadio Adriatico.
In the first half, chances were at a premium with both defences unwilling to let their opponents get too close to goal. Unsurprisingly, the only threats came from long range efforts, with Cagliari’s Albin Ekdal missing the target by a few yards from fully 40 yards in the sixth minute.
Gaetano D’Agostino provided Pescara’s response with a 30-yard effort which wasn’t far off before former Manchester City midfielder Vladimir Weiss saw his long range effort was tipped onto the post.
Sau gave Cagliari the lead in the 54th minute when he met Andrea Cossu’s cross with a header inside Mattia Perin’s left-hand post.
Pescara’s heads dropped and they soon conceded a second as their resistance broke completely. Francesco Pisano sent in the cross from the right which was collected by Sau, who turned and shot into the same corner as his first goal to double Cagliari’s advantage.
