Raheem Sterling put Liverpool in front against Newcastle United after just ten minutes with a brilliant curling effort from inside the box, but the Magpies’ defending left much to be desired.
The England forward took down a crossfield Jordan Henderson through ball on the left side of the area, before cutting inside to avoid the attention of multiple members of the Newcastle back line, and finding the far corner with a cute shot.
Ryan Taylor and Gabriel Obertan ought to be particularly ashamed of the ease in which Sterling beat them, but the 20 year-old attacker still deserves plenty of credit for taking the opportunity with such aplomb.
Sterling’s goal made him the Merseyside club’s top scorer in the Premier League outright, with seven strikes to his name, and highlights his importance to Liverpool – especially with last season’s top scorer Luis Suarez sold last summer, and main striker Daniel Sturridge continuing to struggle with injury.
Liverpool and Sterling have been locked in a contract dispute for much of the season, with the player having confirmed in a BBC interview that he has turned down a deal worth £100,000 per week.
Brendan Rodgers is clearly aware of the Golden Boy award holder’s value – but must convince the youngster his future rests at Anfield.
