Ten man Reims defeated Paris Saint-Germain in a stunning Ligue 1 performance against the champions elect.
Reims gave their best performance of the season in a stunning upset over Paris Saint-Germain – despite going down to ten men early in the second half.
When Christophe Glombard received his marching orders for a second yellow with the score goalless, the stage seemed set for PSG to push for the victory.
Reims had different ideas.
Just five minutes after losing Glombard to go a man down, Grzegorz Krychowiak scored for the home side.
Pouncing from short range after PSG failed to clear a corner, and Reims had an unlikely advantage.
Of course, they still had the task of holding on to their advantage for half an hour – no easy task when your opponents have players on their books of the calibre of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucas Moura, Javier Pastore and David Beckham, who came off the bench just after the goal was scored.
Beckham gave an erratic performance, completing just three of his seven long balls and none of his four crosses finding a team-mate.
He was far from the worst of the visitors though, with both Javier Pastore and Lucas Moura giving disastrous performances.
Paris Saint-Germain now have just a three point lead at the top of Ligue 1, and Olympique Lyonnais can draw level with them if they beat Bordeaux on Sunday.
Because Lyon will have played 27 games to PSG’s 26, the French capital side will still be strong favourites to claim the title, but matches like today show that they can take nothing for granted.
