To call Sunderland’s defence an embarrassment might be an insult to other bad defences.
It took Bournemouth less than 10 minutes to take a two-goal lead over Sunderland, further heightening the threat of relegation for the Black Cats after nine seasons in the Premier League.
Callum Wilson scored his fifth goal of the season after just four minutes, but things went from bad to worse for Sunderland before anyone could blink as Matt Ritchie struck this ninth-minute stunner.
The 2-0 win for Bournemouth marked their first ever Premier League home win, and gave them a bit of breathing room in the table. They sit 11th in the standings, above Chelsea and Liverpool.
As for Sunderland, a loss keeps them bottom of the table below local rivals Newcastle United, who were also beaten this afternoon, on goal difference and without a win in six games this campaign.
Although they are now two games without a goal, defence continues to be the prime area of concern for Dick Advocaat, and early-season villain Younes Kaboul was sent off at Dean Court.
The only club in the Premier League that has allowed close to the 13 goals that Sunderland have conceded this season is Chelsea with 12. All other clubs have conceded nine or fewer so far this season.
