Over the years several stars have tried their hand at selling products.
Footballers are among some of the most famous stars in the world and as a result advertisers are climbing over each other to get the best of the bunch for their products.
Unfortunately, the fact that the players are sportsmen and not actors often results in some fairly shocking results. Here’s the good, the bad and downright ugly from fanatix.
This is a current advert from Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia, with some playful messing about as a rock star from the Ecuadorian for drinks product Pony Malta.
It’s an improvement on this fairly seedy effort from Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor however.
Pervy Adebayor may be, but at least the African put something into the acting part – which is more than can be said for this wooden performance from Wayne Rooney, who makes Red Devils team mates Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra look like Oscar winners.
Although for absurdity nothing quite tops this effort from the Blackburn Rovers team for club owners Venky’s. The Indian chicken distributors have essentially ruined Rovers now and it all started here.
Now Nike realised early on that the best way to get a good performance out of a footballer was to, shock horror, get them to play football.
Here’s a couple of classics, starting with the three-a-side cage epic and ending with Portugal and Brazil playing keepy-uppys around a stadium.
Not that the sports clothing lot always get it right, as shown by this odd feature from the 1990s featuring Eric Cantona, Paolo Maldini and Ian Wright.
Bare in mind Cantona is now an actor.
Occasionally advertisers hit onto a winner and find a charismatic player who could give a vaguely convincing performance for 30 seconds – step forward former Arsenal ace Thierry Henry.
Yet before Henry there was another Frenchman who was gracing our screens and that was David Ginola and the midfielder’s luscious locks. Remember this?
And finally. Here is perennial joker Jimmy Bullard doing his own version of a shampoo advert. Enjoy!
