Afghanistan has picked up its first ever World Cup win, beating Scotland in a thrilling contest in Dunedin.
The Afghanis looked on track to easily reach Scotland’s modest total of 211, but a massive mid-order collapse saw them languishing at 7 for 97 halfway through its innings.
Samiullah Shenwari and Dawlat Zadran steadied the ship with a 35-run partnership before Zadran was caught in the covers by Scotland captain Preston Mommsen.
Shenwari stepped up and looked to be pushing Afghanistan on its way to victory before he was agonisingly caught in the deep on 96.
His wickets left Hamid Hassan and Shapoor Zadran needing a run-a-ball 19-run stand to win the game and they duly delivered, but not without any scares.
With just five balls remaining, Zadran was almost run out after poor running gifted Josh Davey the chance to win the game for Scotland with a direct hit from close range.
