8. Alec Stewart – England, 8463 runs, average 39.54:
The former England captain had an inconsistent career with the bat, preferring to bat against pace rather than spin bowling.
That being said Stewart could be utterly unstoppable at times, as he showed against the West Indies in 1993 with a century in each innings.
He shared the role of wicketkeeper in the 1990s with Jack Russell before the latter retired and Stewart went on to become the most capped player in England’s history with 133 Test matches.
The “Gaffer” as he was affectionately known fittingly hit a century in his 100th Test and bowed out of all forms of the game in 2003.
