6. Les Ames – England, 2434 runs, average 40.56:
The second English wicketkeeper batsman on the list and by far the oldest as Ames played his cricket during the late 1920s and 1930s.
The Englishman is widely regarded by cricket historians to be the most complete wicketkeeper batsman of all time, but unfortunately persistent back injuries shortened his international career.
As a ‘keeper Ames was almost unrivaled, executing 418 stumpings and in a series against South Africa in 1938/39 amazingly conceding just one bye for every 275 balls.
Ames was also the first wicketkeeper to score a century for England. He died at his home in Kent in 1990 aged 84.
