Watch as Uruguay’s Alvaro Pereira returns to the field after being knocked out by the knee of Raheem Sterling.
Uruguay defender Alvaro Pereira has ignored medical advice and continued to play after being knocked out by an inadvertent knee to the head during his sides 2-1 World Cup win over England last night.
In what is sure to stir up debate over concussion rules in football, Pereira played out the game despite laying motionless and clearly unconscious in the 61st minute of the match.
Pereira apologised for his actions after the game, saying he got caught up in the moment of the big match.
“It was a moment of madness…I’ve apologised to the doctor because I know it’s his job to look after the players,” he told reporters.
“I went back on dizzy but, in the heat of the moment, with a hot head, you don’t think properly.
“Still, it was a time to help the team and to get a result. And the most important thing is that we got the result.”
