The Latvian prospect was a dark horse throughout the build up to the Draft process at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Thursday night, with many general managers and executives suggesting that he was arguably the most talented player available.
While many believe that he will need a year or two to fully adjust and develop his game to an NBA level, it appears to be an astute move from the Knicks and Phil Jackson which has significant upside in future years.
However, that meant little to the Knicks fans in attendance as they booed the decision while many were seen in the crowd showing their displeasure with the selection.
It remains to be seen whether or not Porzingis can prove them wrong as early as next season, but the Knicks certainly have faith in him and so it will be interesting to see how he adapts to his new surroundings after previously playing in Europe.
Karl-Anthony Towns was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the number one overall pick, with D’Angelo Russell heading to the Los Angeles Lakers while Jahlil Okafor will play for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Based on the names left on the board, the Knicks had plenty of top options, but they will now hope to get the most out of Porzingis with a view of adding in free agency and competing next season.
